Ford Motor Company Leads Industry with Most IIHS Top Safety PicksFord Motor Company leads all automakers in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS') annual list of Top Safety Picks. The company's Top Safety Picks -- earned by the Ford Edge, Taurus, Taurus X, Mercury Sable and Lincoln MKX, along with the Volvo S80, C70 and XC90 -- were the most Ford Motor Company ever earned in a single year, and the most ever issued by IIHS to a single automaker in one year. These eight vehicles helped drive IIHS' overall number of Top Safety Picks up to 34 for the 2008 model year, compared with 13 issued industry-wide for the 2007 model year.

Ford Leads the Safest Cars

The number of new cars considered the safest by the insurance industry nearly tripled in the past year, helped by automakers' push to make certain safety equipment more widely available.
Ford and Honda had the most vehicles on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's annual list of the safest cars for the 2008 model year.
Thirty-four vehicles received the top safety pick designation for 2008, compared with 13 vehicles from the 2007 model year.

The institute requires new cars and trucks to have electronic stability control, or ESC, to qualify for the award. Many auto companies are putting the anti-rollover technology into their fleets ahead of a government requirement for the systems by the 2012 model year.
"Vehicles should be designed to provide good occupant protection when crashes occur, but now with ESC we have the possibility of preventing many crashes altogether," said Adrian Lund, the institute's president.
Lundcited studies that have estimated that as many as 10,000 fatal crashes could be avoided annually if all vehicles had the technology.

Stability control is key Ford was represented on the list by the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable passenger cars with optional ESC, and the Ford Edge, Ford Taurus X and Lincoln MKX midsize sport-utility vehicles. The Volvo S80, C70 midsize convertible and XC90 SUV, part of Ford's Volvo unit, made the list.
Ford has said previously that it would put stability control on its entire lineup by the end of 2009.
Honda and its Acura unit had seven vehicles on the list: the Honda Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, CR-V and Element, and the Acura MDX and RDX SUVs. Honda has had stability control on all SUVs, pickups and minivans since the 2007 model year and the technology is now standard on the Accord.Electronic stability control senses when a driver may lose control of the vehicle and automatically applies brakes to individual wheels to help keep it stable and avoid a rollover. The technology helps motorists avoid skidding across slick roads or keep control of their cars when swerving to avoid an unexpected object in the road.
Subaru and Hyundai each had four vehicles on the list: the Subaru Legacy and Impreza with optional ESC, Subaru Tribeca and Forester with ESC; the Hyundai Entourage, and the Hyundai Santa Fe and Veracruz built after August 2007. Kia, a subsidiary of Hyundai, had the Sedona minivan on the list.
Safety improving all around Pickup trucks were eligible to win for the first time this year because the institute conducted side-impact tests on many models. The Toyota Tundra, which has standard stability control and side air bags, was the first pickup truck to receive the insurance institute's designation.
Toyotaalso had the Highlander SUV on the list, while Volkswagen's Audi subsidiary was represented by the A3, A4 and A6 passenger cars.
With the advent of multiple air bags, most vehicles score a "good" rating on the institute's frontal crash tests. Differences in rear and side crashes now make the difference between those that make the Top Safety Pick list and those that don't.
The institute said Toyota could have had 10 more vehicles on the list and Volkswagen could have added four if they had improved seat and head restraint designs, important in protecting against whiplash injuries in rear-end crashes.
Toyotaspokesman Bill Kwong said its 2008 vehicles have active headrests, which move closer to the backs of a motorist's head in rear-end crashes. Kwong said it provides a "great level of safety for the customer in the real world." A message was left with a Volkswagen spokesman.
Other vehicles to make the list included: Saab 9-3, BMW X3 and X5, Mercedes M-Class and the Saturn Vue built after December 2007. (Saturn will incorporate changes to side air bag design that improve the test results, the IIHS said.)
The institute said the awards help consumers compare vehicles without having to review results from multiple tests.

Earlier this year, the IRS confirmed that the following tax credits were still available for 2005, 2006 and 2007 model-year Ford hybrids:

Note: The IRS announced that federal tax credits have expired on the new Toyota and Lexus hybrid models. Only Toyota and Lexus hybrids purchased before October 1st are eligible for a tax credit. The federal tax credit for new hybrid vehicles phases our after a marmaker has sold 60,000 hybrid vehicles. Toyota and its Lexus luxury division jut that limie last summer. After that, the tax credits were halved.

GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson noted that there is a virtual dead-heat among many of the domestic mainstream brands that are rated at industry average, but he said "there is always room for improvement...we're good, but we need to get better."
Porsche and Toyota's Lexus were the top-performing brands in the study, followed by Ford's Lincoln nameplate. Honda's high-volume Honda brand was fourth in the survey and the top mainline brand. Mercedes-Benz, which took a reputation hit recently for quality problems, was the fifth-best brand in the survey.
The IQS, along with the firm's annual durability study, is considered an industry benchmark in terms of vehicle quality. In recent years, the study has shown a steady improvement in quality performance for Detroit's Big Three auto makers.
J.D. Power and Associates compiles its IQS by surveying new-car buys in the first three months of vehicle ownership and ranks auto makers and individual vehicles on a problems-per-100-vehicles-sold basis. The firm collected results from 450 owners of each vehicle in the study an 97,000 people were polled in total.
J.D. Power and Associates analyst Neal Oddes said the overall U.S. auto industry has increased quality has posted a 120% improvement in quality compared to the study conducted 20 years ago, in 2007. The industry's improvement in quality came as more and more brands have been introduced in the U.S. market, giving consumers more choice. The proliferation of choice has driven U.S. auto makers to increasingly focus on improving vehicle attributes, such as quality, in order to keep up.
Ford Quality Chief Bennie Fowler, in an interview, said Ford's improvement is indicative of "attention to detail and responding what customers want."
Ford has been scrambling to improve quality since a series of quality mishaps plagued the auto maker earlier in the decade. Oddes noted that Ford's newly-launched vehicles are helping drive the auto maker's gains.
Even as Ford gains ground in quality, it continues to lose U.S. market share as it backs away from selling heavy volumes of vehicles to rental car fleets and as it loses retail buyers on a consistent basis. In addition to improving quality, Ford has been trying to improve the image and resale value of its vehicles.
Oddes said GM has shown improvement in pockets, but GM in general is posting an inconsistent performance when it comes to vehicles it recently launched in the market. He said some are performing well, but some new vehicles have fallen off the mark. Wilkinson said the auto maker is scoring well with its consumers on issues like interior and design.
GM posted a retail sales gain over the first five months of the year.

Ford F-150 Review

The Ford F-150 is part of the F-Series, a descriptor used to cover the entire succession of Ford pickups that have been in production for nearly 60 years. Since that genesis, millions of Ford trucks have been sold. In fact, the F-150 has been the most popular vehicle sold in the United States for nearly every year of the past three decades.
This Ford truck is a go-to choice for many consumers. Those with commercial or small business needs view it as a reliable workhorse. Others see it as a vehicle that can handle a night out on the town just as easily as it does towing, hauling and recreation. A wide variety of body configurations, power trains and trim levels makes it easy to get the F-150 you want.
The full-size truck market segment has seen recent expansion and renewal. There are now more choices than ever. Shoppers are certainly encouraged to do their research, but there's little reason to doubt that the Ford F-150 will continue to be one of America's most popular new vehicles sold, as well as a keen choice for a used pickup truck.
The current-generation Ford F-150 has been available since the 2004 model year. It's available in three body styles and five different trim levels. The base XL is a standard work truck with a vinyl or cloth interior and minimal amenities. The STX has a few extra features, but most buyers go with the F-150 XLT, as it represents the best value and is available with the widest array of options. There's also the off-road-oriented FX4 trim level, the top-of-the-line Lariat and the special King Ranch and Harley Davidson packages.
There are three engine choices on this Ford truck: the standard 202-horsepower 4.2-liter V6, a 231-hp 4.6-liter V8 and an optional 300-hp 5.4-liter V8. Almost all variants will be equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission, though the V6 does come standard with a five-speed manual. All F-150 trim levels (except the FX4) and body styles can be equipped as either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
In Ford F-150 reviews, this model is typically considered to be the best F-150 yet. It's praised for its exceptional ride and handling characteristics and attractive and functional interior designs. Noted downsides include lackluster acceleration and braking, and limited storage space. So far, Ford has not made any dramatic changes or updates to this model.
Though the F-150 nameplate dates back to 1975, its roots can be traced to 1948. This is when the first modern light-duty, half-ton Ford pickup truck debuted. It was known as the F-1 and was renamed F-100 in the early 1950s. Ford has been making F-Series trucks ever since.
Many shoppers interested in a used Ford F-150 will come across the truck sold for the 1997-2003 model years. Though not as refined as the current model, it was a very capable truck that got just about everything right and it's a perennial pick in the "Large Pickup" category of Edmunds.com's Used Car Best Bets. When it debuted, its smooth exterior styling was a dramatic departure from previous F-150s, which were much more boxy and traditional in appearance.
For the most part, this generation mirrors the current one in terms of cab styles, trim levels and powertrains. Engine offerings included a 4.2-liter V6, a 4.6-liter V8 and a 5.4-liter V8. In 2000, the first Harley-Davidson edition was released. The following year saw the introduction of the King Ranch trim and the crew cab (Super Crew) body style. In 1999, Ford brought back the high-performance Lightning.
Trucks from the first half of the 1990s could be considered the last of the F-150s that placed utility first and luxury second. These trucks were available in two body styles (regular and extended cab) and a few trim levels. The Lightning performance version debuted in 1993, and the XLT Lariat was typically the top trim until the Eddie Bauer trim debuted in 1995. Main engines choices were a 4.9-liter inline six, a 5.0-liter V8 and a 5.8-liter V8. In terms of a purchase, Ford F-150 models built for 1994 and afterwards might be preferable for many buyers, as they had a standard driver-side airbag and an improved interior design.
