Ford Leads the Safest Cars

Ford Motor Company Leads Industry with Most IIHS Top Safety PicksFord Motor Company leads all automakers in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS') annual list of Top Safety Picks. The company's Top Safety Picks -- earned by the Ford Edge, Taurus, Taurus X, Mercury Sable and Lincoln MKX, along with the Volvo S80, C70 and XC90 -- were the most Ford Motor Company ever earned in a single year, and the most ever issued by IIHS to a single automaker in one year. These eight vehicles helped drive IIHS' overall number of Top Safety Picks up to 34 for the 2008 model year, compared with 13 issued industry-wide for the 2007 model year.
Note: To earn a Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must demonstrate top crash performance in front, side and rear crash tests. Products must also be available with electronic stability control. Ford Motor Company will build all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury retail cars and trucks with standard electronic stability control (ESC) by the end of 2009. Ford already is a world leader in the technology, with ESC currently standard on all Ford mid- and full-size SUVs, and standard ESC expanded to small SUVs and all CUVs this year.
