2012 Police Interceptor from the Gresham Ford Fleet Department

How do you top the industry’s leading police car? The Ford Crown Victoria has held that title for 15 years. In 2011 the Crown Victoria will be removed from the line-up of Ford Special Service Vehicles. It will be replaced by the all-new Ford Police Interceptor, engineered to exceed durability, safety and performance over the current Police Interceptor.

The all-new Police Interceptor is designed to handle the rigors of police work, including industry-leading power train, safety and technology innovations. Ford will also add a second Police Interceptor to the lineup, a utility vehicle to provide customers a choice of the best vehicle to suit their needs. Many municipalities have purchased Ford Expedition Special Service Vehicles from Fleet Manager, Annette Wetzel-Ramirez because the vehicle simply meets their needs better than the Crown Victoria.

Many fleets who experimented with the Dodge Charger have found that the vehicle has much higher maintenance costs. For example changing the oil in a CVPI would cost you about $25 however to change the oil in a Hemi powered Dodge Charger the cost is about $75, simply because the Hemi engine uses far more oil. With oil prices increasing many fiscally conscience municipalities are choosing to leave the Dodge Charger behind.

“Police nationwide asked for a new kind of weapon in the battle for public safety, and Ford is answering the call with a purpose-built vehicle – engineered and built in America – that’s as dynamic as it is durable,” said Mark Fields, Ford President of the Americas. Bess Wills, General Manager of Gresham Ford also believes this is the right police vehicle at the right time.

The all new Police Interceptor has truly answered the public sector’s needs. To develop the all-new Police Interceptor, Ford engineers worked hand-in-hand with Ford’s Police Advisory Board of law enforcement professionals, which provided input on key vehicle attributes such as safety, performance, durability, driver comfort and functionality. The advisory board uses fleet managers to road test the vehicles performance, look and space inside to make it the best vehicle possible.

Gresham Ford appreciates the focus on safety that Ford provides. Continuing Ford’s safety leadership includes engineering the Police Interceptor to pass 75-mph rear-end crash testing. Currently, the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is the only pursuit sedan to meet this test. Not Dodge Charger or the Chevy Impala can say that they protect officers like the Ford Crown Victoria has and the New Ford Police Interceptor will. The new 2012 Police Interceptor also features Ford’s exclusive Safety Canopy side-curtain air bag rollover protection system to help protect front and rear outboard passengers in both rollover and side-impact crashes. The multiple side-curtain air bags use Ford’s unique Roll Fold technology to help them slip between the occupant and the side window. All of these safety measures are there to keep police officers safe. The increased power and enhanced sophistication have been very impressive. The Gresham Ford Fleet Department is excited to be adding this vehicle to its inventory. Ford’s Police Interceptor engine strategy will provide a V6 lineup that performs equal to or better than V8 engines. The lineup comes with two power train options, allowing police to choose the powerhouse that best meets their patrol requirements.

A highly efficient 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering at least 263 horsepower and E85 compatibility is 25 percent more efficient than the 4.6-liter Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) V8 offered in the current Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Plus, an all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbocharged, direct-injection engine will deliver at least 365 horsepower and 350 ft.-lb. of torque across a broad rpm range. This will help the zero to sixty capacity of the 2012 Police Interceptor. EcoBoost brings municipalities and police fleet administrators the first ultra high-performance, yet environmentally friendly, police pursuit vehicle. Gresham Ford Fleet Department will share the benefits of this technology with the Oregon and Washington municipalities. Offering performance that bests normally aspirated V8 powered police cruisers and comparable fuel economy and CO2 emissions to the standard V6, EcoBoost represents a triple-win for police departments, the tax-paying constituents they serve and the environment they help collectively to preserve. A high-capacity six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission delivers the power of EcoBoost to the road via the sophisticated torque-sensing all-wheel-drive system. This will come in handy for those cities and counties that have lots of muddy roads to cover because no one likes to get stuck in the mud.

Picture Your Pet

Pets are an important part of people’s lives. Annette has Brutus. Who was under her desk for his first few
months of adoption. He has grown and grown and GROWN! Now he is as big as the desk with just as big of a personality. Then there is Joe, who has beautiful little Abby, who we get to see each grooming day. Patti has Fletch who comes in to visit when she works on weekends.  Lastly, there is Laurie’s little Maggie that
could be the “Dealer With a Heart’s” mascot, as heart surgery saved her precious life early on.
However, there is no more important pet at Gresham Ford than Fazio McGee (I think he is Irish as he wore green on St. Patrick’s Day). He is the Seeing Eye Dog of Tracy.  With his help, she comes to work each
day on the bus. As a working dog, he skillfully guides her to her computer station, and then proceeds to become a pet and lie at her feet and take a nap.  He graduated at the local Guide Dogs for the Blind School. If you have not had a chance to visit this campus for a graduation, I encourage you to do so.  Go their website guidedogs.com for more information.  Tracy has become a valued member of our team at Gresham Ford making customer service calls. Our customers appreciate her sweet voice.  We have been blessed by her skills, but none of this would have been possible without Fazio graduating from guide dog school.  I am sure he was at the top of his class!  We are a pet friendly store. We would love to have a picture of your pet on our Community’s Cutest Pets Bulletin Board coming April 1st. Send your picture to laurie@greshamford.com or just drop it by. We love to meet you and your pet!

2011 Ford Fiesta Proves Itself

Fiesta has already received rave reviews in Europe and Asia, and it’s scheduled to go on sale in North America this summer. Gresham Ford will be one of the first Oregon Ford dealerships to get a 2011 Ford Fiesta.

Ford Motor Company gave 100 people each a 2011 Ford Fiesta and let them drive. Click Here to see just one video of what two guys do in their Fiesta. Over the last several months, the 100 Fiesta Movement agents have been spending a lot of time in their cars out in public and online using a variety of today’s media. They took all kinds of applications. Here is one of the winning applications for a Ford Fiesta agent. What have the agents discovered about Fiesta? This car is ready to deliver on all fronts. Here’s a sampling of their latest updates.

Fiesta is stylish in and out.Fiesta’s sleek design, attention to detail and use of premium materials set it apart from other small cars. It looks great with accessories too, for that personal touch. Key features include:
4-door or 5-door configurations,Chrome accents, aggressive low roofline, new, vibrant exterior colors, edgy interior design that features premium
materials throughout. Fiesta agent Jonathan Nafarrete photographed Fiesta in front of some of the most creative and colorful street art in and around Los Angeles. Which was the work of art? It was honestly a toss-up.
With its European driving dynamics, precision steering and lightning-fast gear changes, Fiesta is as fun to drive on city streets as it is on the
expressway. Key features include: Ford of Europe-developed vehicle dynamics
engineered for low noise, vibration and harshness or (NVH), electric power-assisted rack-and‑pinion steering for nimble, precise response, multifunction display in center stack with SYNC. Many people are saying nice things about the new subcompact car. “Its peppy little 1.6-liter Duratec four-banger delivers an acceptable 118 hp and 112 lb.-ft. of torque in surprisingly smooth fashion for such a small engine, but getting at that power is made all the more fun by a lively five-speed manual with gears spaced just right to keep you in the fat of the power band without
constant rowing.” — Natalie Neff, AutoWeek

Fiesta Performance — Powerful, Efficient and a Blast to Drive!

The wait is almost over. The 2011 Fiesta, revealed at December’s Los Angeles Auto Show, is set to arrive at Gresham Ford in June 2010. Gresham Ford is now taking reservations for the all new Ford Fiesta.
Fiesta is highly crafted and loaded with features and technology that others in the growing B-segment cannot offer. With its kinetic design, cutting-edge technology and outstanding craftsmanship, Fiesta continues to add to the new standard of value being established by the quality and durability of the Ford brand.
The 2011 Ford Fiesta's performance is impressive. Performance on this new Ford car shows 119 horsepower plus a projected best-in-class fuel economy of 40 mpg highway. That's important to Oregon and SW Washington residents who want to reduce their carbon footprint. Gresham Ford is a Oregon Ford Dealer that understands it isn't always about the horsepower. It can be about being green and preserving the environment. In fact the 2011 Ford Fiesta’s craftsmanship and use of high-quality materials set it apart from other vehicles in the B-segment or sub compact groups.

Oregon will be impressed with the technology of the 2011 Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta boasts smart features like Intelligent Access with Push Button Start and SYNC with Traffic, Directions and Information. Technology options like this are just not available on other subcompact and B segment vehicles.

Thanks to its European-inspired suspension, the Ford Fiesta delivers a zippy, responsive, fun to-drive experience. Highlights of the Ford Fiesta include:
• Standard AdvanceTrac® electronic stability control
• Lane Change Technology simplifies the way drivers signal and maneuver on the road. With the simple flick of the lever — either up or down (right or left) — the turn indicators will blink three times and then automatically shut off. The lever can be held in the lane change position longer for additional blinks. To initiate the turn signal, drivers simply move the switch into the standard position, one more press beyond the lane-change mode.

The all new Ford Fiesta also has wide front and rear track for ground-hugging handling including large front stabilizer bar to help minimize body roll. Electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering with Drift Control with active Nibble Control which provides a more comfortable driving experience by detecting steering wheel “nibble” rotational variations and automatically adapting to cancel unwanted vibrations. The change is seamless and imperceptible to the driver. How cool is that? Gresham Ford is happy to have all of its Sales Professionals specially trained in the Ford Fiesta. Anyone of them can explain and show you the many details put into making the Ford Fiesta a truly fantastic Ford Car.
Gresham Ford offers reservations on the Ford Fiesta with its 15-inch wheels standard, 16-inch available from the factory, front disc/rear drum Anti-lock Braking System (ABS). The independent Macpherson strut front suspension and non-independent twist beam rear suspension make all the difference. Gresham Ford is a full service Oregon Ford Dealer with a Heart. Gresham Ford gives back to the community through it’s “Commitment to the Community” program. Gresham Ford also offers VIP to everyone. Come visit Gresham Ford today and see the difference.

Wayne’s Our Idol!

There were 37 American Idols right here in Gresham last Saturday. The auditions for “East County’s Got Talent” were held at the Paesano Club from 9-3:00 p.m. and the quality of all who auditioned was over the top. Happy I didn’t have to be a judge – all the acts, singers, dancers, guitar players, and violinists, etc. were fabulous. Whether he wins or looses our personal favorite was our guitar playing Service Advisor Wayne Richardet. Thank you Wayne for taking the time to entertain the troops you will always be our Idol!

Representative Greg Matthews served as MC for the auditions and Dr. Ski will take over the task at the April show. They add humor, wit and a distinctive charm that exceeds Ryan Seacrest or that Simon guy. Thank you for giving your time to this project which many hope will become an annual event.

Now the reason for this rant – get tickets NOW!! We have some at Gresham Ford, $10 for Adults, $5 for children they will be more at the door. All proceeds go to support our Greater Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce, but the real reason to get a ticket is that it will be a “really good show” – better than productions that cost five times as much. Don’t miss it – April 23, 2010 at Mt. Hood Community College Theatre.

Better than Ever

We could tell you that Ford and Gresham Ford is better than ever but instead we'll just give you the numbers and let you decide for yourself.

Higher sales for every brand and in every product category propelled Ford Motor Company to a 43 percent sales increase in February versus a year ago. Compared with January, Ford’s February sales are up 22 percent.

February sales were higher throughout Ford’s line-up. Cars were up 54 percent versus a year ago, utilities were up 39 percent, and trucks were up 36 percent. Among brands, Ford sales were up 46 percent, Lincoln sales were up 19 percent, and Mercury sales were up 24 percent.

Year to date through February, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 250,050, up 34 percent versus a year ago.

Ford said it remains committed to delivering the freshest line-up of new products in the U.S. industry. New or significantly upgraded vehicles this year include the Ford Fiesta, Focus, Edge and Edge Sport, Explorer, F-Series Super Duty, Transit Connect Electric, Lincoln MKX and an all-new small car for Mercury.

In addition, the company is introducing nine new or upgraded fuel-efficient engines and six new transmissions this year. They include the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, new Mustang V-6 and V-8, new Super Duty 6.7-liter diesel and 6.2-liter gasoline engines.

Ford estimates its February U.S. total market share was approximately 17 percent – up 3 percentage points versus a year ago.

In February, Ford sales to retail customers were 28 percent higher versus a year ago, and sales to fleet customers were up 74 percent.

North American Production

In the second quarter of 2010, Ford plans to produce 595,000 vehicles, up 144,000 vehicles (32 percent) versus the same period a year ago. Ford’s first quarter production plan is 570,000 vehicles, unchanged from the prior forecast.

Additional Sales Highlights

•February sales of the Ford Fusion, Motor Trend’s Car of the Year, were more than double year-ago levels (up 116 percent). Fusion set a new February sales record – its 10th monthly sales record in 11 months. The Fusion Hybrid recently was named North American Car of the Year.

•Mercury Milan sales were higher than a year ago for the fourth month in a row.

•February sales of Ford Mustang and Focus and Lincoln MKZ also were higher.

•Ford Taurus sales totaled 6,359, up 93 percent versus a year ago. Since the introduction of the all-new model in August, Taurus sales are nearly double year-ago levels. The average conquest rate for Taurus is 46 percent nationwide and 76 percent on the West Coast.

•Ford’s F-Series – America’s best-selling truck for 33 years in a row and best-selling vehicle (car or truck) for 28 years in row – posted a 39 percent increase in February. In 2009, F-Series increased its leadership position among full-size pickups with a 4 percentage-point gain in segment share, and the F-Series continues to gain share in 2010 with a 6-point gain in January.

•Production of the all-new F-Series Super Duty has begun at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant.

•Utility vehicles also posted strong sales increases. In February, Escape sales were up 50 percent versus a year ago, Edge sales were up 67 percent, Flex sales were up 19 percent, and Mercury Mariner sales were up 39 percent. Sales for traditional SUVs (Explorer, Expedition and Navigator) also were higher than a year ago.

•Sales for Ford’s E-Series van (Econoline/Club Wagon) were up 26 percent versus a year ago. E-Series has been America’s best-selling full-size van for 31 years.

•Sales of the new Ford Transit Connect – a small commercial van introduced in mid-2009 – totaled 1,338 in February. Ford’s share of the commercial van segment is more than 60 percent. Production of a battery-electric Transit Connect begins later this year.

Gresham Ford is doing a fantastic job of serving the Gresham and Portland areas. With the introduction of the Ford Transit, Gresham Ford has increased it's options for Commercial Fleet Customers. The Ford Transit has 1600lbs payload and gets 21/25 MPG which keeps those Fleet Maintenance costs low. Visit the Gresham Ford Fleet Team on the web or call 503-969-4184.

With the simple press of a button, it will detect an available parallel parking space and automatically steer the vehicle into the space, without touching the steering wheel, while you control the accelerator, gearshift and brakes. You fell guilty like your cheating but it's sooooo cool. Active Park Assist uses an ultrasonic-based sensing system and Electric Power-assist Steering (EPS) to identify and position the vehicle for parallel parking; calculates the optimal steering angle and quickly steers the vehicle into a parking spot, while providing very simple visual instructions and chimes (on the message center) that coach the driver during the entire parking maneuver. Only the message center isn't yelling and griping the seat making you nervous and stressed. Side looking sensors in the front bumper increase the ease, speed and accuracy of parking over competing, camera-reliant systems like that on Lexus/Toyota but better. It also measures and offers parking spaces; parks on grades; deactivates when a passenger door is opened and avoids opposite parked obstacles, while the Lexus/Toyota system cannot. Poor Lexus and Toyota. Active park assist is just simpler to use, parks in tighter spaces, closer to the curb, faster and more consistently than the Lexus/Toyota system with a more affordable. Let's hear it for the Big Blue Oval. Now I can finally feel confident parallel parking with my Dad in the car.

When you take a test-drive, you'll see how simply and intuitively the system operates. The vehicle must be driven at 18 mph or less and within 16 to 60 inches away from the parked vehicles to work correctly. Then you just activate the system by pressing the center console activation button that will prompt you of any feasible parallel-parking space on the active side. (Note: Each available parking space is scanned on both sides as you drive by them, but the system only offers those that are available on the active side of the vehicle. If the turn signal is not used, the active side defaults to the passenger side. Arrow symbols in the message center indicate which side is active. Remember to use your blinker. The system prompts you to accept the system’s assistance to park by following the simple instructions on the message center and hearing the chimes. Aren't chimes nice. No pressure no yelling just a nice cheerful chime. The steering system takes over and steers the car into the parking space hands-free. Reinforce that the driver still shifts the transmission and operates the gas and brake pedals. The vehicle speed must remain lower than 6 mph once the system is controlling the steering, otherwise it will deactivate the system. Slow down you speed demons, perfection takes time. The message center also offers a visual and audible driver interface advises you about the proximity of other cars, objects and people, and provides instructions
The steering is all done automatically, but the driver remains responsible for safe parking and can interrupt the system by grasping the steering wheel or pressing the activation button at any time. You're still responsible if you run over the neighbors cat so keep your eyes open.
Active Park Assist requires no special setup the main benefit of the system: stress-free parallel parking with the touch of a button. To work properly, the front side looking sensors must be clear of snow, ice and significant levels of frost or mud, so keep your car clean. The Active Park Assist feature is currently available on the:2010 Ford Flex, 2010 Ford Escape, and 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid. January Auto Sales

By Jesse Snyder
Automotive News | February 2, 2010 - 12:00 pm EST
UPDATED: 2/2/10 2:37 p.m. ET
Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc., hobbled by suspended sales on eight recalled models, suffered a 16 percent drop in January demand while most competitors rose from depressed levels of a year ago.

U.S. sales at Toyota Division, which markets each of the recalled models, fell 19 percent. The Lexus luxury division, which wasn't targeted in the Jan. 21 recall, gained 5 percent.

Sales at Ford Motor Co. jumped 25 percent -- the company's fourth straight monthly increase. General Motors Co. was up 14 percent, while Chrysler Group, the other survivor of a 2009 bankruptcy, fell 11 percent. In unit sales, Chrysler fell behind Nissan North America, which advanced 16 percent. American Honda slipped 5 percent.

Subaru, the only brand with U.S. sales gains in each of the past two years, began 2010 with a 28 percent sales jump.

Shinichi Sasaki, Toyota's vice president in charge of quality, said today in Japan that the automaker's sales probably will take a hit. On Jan. 26, Toyota halted U.S. sales of eight models following a recall of 2.3 million vehicles tied to faulty accelerator pedals.

Analysts expected Toyota's woes to boost sales and market shares for its largest competitors in the United States. GM, Ford, Chrysler Group and Hyundai all launched incentives last week aimed at luring Toyota customers.

Ford said today it didn't see any change in conquest sales based on the developments at Toyota. "Just a week into this announcement, it's very hard to predict what's going to happen," said George Pipas, Ford's chief sales analyst.

Beyond January, Toyota's sales shutdown will have a "significant" impact in the short term, said David Sargeant, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power & Associates, before today's results were released. He said Toyota will likely to lose a few percentage points of market share for February.

"The bigger issue is what's the longer-term impact on their reputation and how that will affect sales going forward," Sargeant said. "What we know is that Toyota's sales are very heavily dependent on reputation for quality and safety."

Yesterday, Toyota said it had found the remedy to fix potentially sticky accelerator pedals in the recalled vehicles, but the company said it is expected to take some time for dealers to complete repairs.

Forecasts

Reuters said analysts and industry executives expect a January selling rate of 10.5 million to 11 million units on a seasonally adjusted annual basis, up from 9.8 million a year earlier. A Bloomberg poll of eight analysts put last month's SAAR at 10.5 million.

Sales fell below the 10 million-unit annualized rate in January 2009 for the first time in almost 30 years, as unit sales fell 37 percent from 2008 amid a deep economic downturn.

Last month's totals are expected to be down from the 11.9 million-unit rate of December -- when automakers posted a 15 percent sales increase compared with the prior year, supported by year-end incentives that helped retail sales.

A total of 10.4 million light vehicles were sold in the United States last year, down from more than 17 million at the start of the decade.

"There's no question that the worst is behind us," Ford's Pipas said before today's results were released. "We're into a period of expansion.

"This is probably not going to be the kind of recovery that is nice and linear," Pipas added. "We're going to see fits and starts for the consumer."

Ford today projected its January market share at 16 percent, in line with the share for all of 2009.

A projected drop in January retail sales is likely to be offset by a strong rebound in fleet demand. Fleet sales were pummeled last year after financing dried up and businesses pulled back on spending in the wake of the U.S. banking bailout.

2010 Ford Fiesta is a MotorTrend Gotta Have Car of the Year

Sub-compact-size models like the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit are now refered to as "B"- class cars. Some thought America didn't care and will continue to love their SUV's. Then crude oil passed $100 a barrel and gas prices approached four bucks a gallon. People are now caring and are buying these B-cars. Ford sold its original Fiesta in the Portland area three decades ago. The Fiesta is one of Ford's most successful cars with over twelve million units sold since 1976. It was a hit, and the Blue Ovals are hoping for a repeat performance with the new one, which hits our shores in calendar year 2010.

Ford has teased us with several concept cars. One named Verve, but globally it has been decided it will be called the Ford Fiesta. It has been available for sales in Europe and other markets in three- and five-door hatch variants. The sedan version, with a conventional trunk, is currently being designed for the U.S. and Asia. Gresham Ford will receive its first Ford Fiesta this Fall but is taking orders now. But it's not hard to figure what it'll look like. "Take the five-door Fiesta," says Ford global design chief J Mays, "and graft on the trunk of the Verve sedan concept, and you'll be 99 percent there." The overall package is more substantial looking than the Fit and better proportioned than the Versa. The jury is still out on whether or not the hatchback model Fiestas will be sold here.

The history of the Fiesta is longer than many realize. In the early 1970s, European demand from consumers for small cars was rising. Even Ford's smallest model, the Escort, was a conventional front-engined, rear wheel drive car; yet competitors were launching smaller, front wheel drive cars, like the Fiat 127 and the Renault 5. The effects of the 1973 energy crisis were also increasing demand for smaller cars. BMC (which had since merged into British Leyland) had entered the mini-car market with its Mini in 1959, while the Rootes Group had launched the ultimately less successful Hillman Imp in 1963, but times had moved on and people looking for small cars now wanted practical hatchbacks instead of conventional saloons. GM had entered the modern supermini market with its conventional Opel Kadett City/Chevette three-door hatchback twins early in 1975.

The original plans for the "Bobcat" specified a desire that the new car cost US$100 less to produce than the Ford Escort. In addition, the car was to have a wheelbase longer than that of the Fiat 127, but with overall length shorter than that of Ford's Escort. The final proposal was put together by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia.

Bobcat was approved in autumn 1973, with Ford's engineering centres in Cologne and Dunton (Essex) collaborating. Customer clinics were held across Europe, targeting female buyers in particular. We're not saying the Fiesta's not Manly. It's very masculine.

Ford estimated that 500,000 Fiestas a year would be produced, and built an all-new engine factory near Valencia, Spain; a transaxle factory near Bordeaux, France; factory extensions for the assembly plants in Dagenham, Essex, and Saarlouis, Germany. Final assembly also took place in Valencia. the Fiesta's production in 2010 is far less complicated. In Spring 2002, the all new five-generation car was unveiled, with no genetic links to the 1976 original. Of this Fiesta Mark V, most engines were carried over from the previous Fiesta.
