Attitude VS. Ability - Attitude Wins

Sometimes inspiration comes from places you never expect, like when I was asked to visit EASTCO a
month or so ago. I had seen the sign, but wasn’t really sure what they did or who they served. It was perfect timing for me to meet these great people – everyone needs a little human inspiration from time to time. They were there to give me a boost. EASTCO provides services for developmentally disabled adults in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington Counties. The experience reminded me of a book I had read a long time ago – so it was kind of eerie when I read in the “Outlook” last week that Shelly Brady, author of “10 Things I Learned from Bill Porter” was recognized nationally as “Mother of the Year” (very deserving) as it was her book that had been haunting me after my visit. I read that book before moving to Gresham but
bought lots of copies to share with all my friends in the auto sales business. I was again reminded of how sometimes true heroes are not those with all the “superhuman accomplishments & skills” but those who do not give up even when dealt some difficult circumstances.

That is the attitude at EASTCO - they never give up. Why in fact, they just show up everyday ready, willing
and make up with attitude all that may be lacking in ability. The exciting part is next Saturday, May 22nd from 4-6:00 p.m. you can visit EASTCO. See for yourself all the great things they are doing. It will make you want to get involved and understand their vision for a new facility. What this group could do with new modern facilities would be on the edge of miraculous. The Open House is located at 215 SW Wallula
Avenue, Gresham – yes right here in our front yard. For more information please call 503-667-0613.

Flat Stanley Loves the "Man with a Plan"

Bob, Preston, Flat Stan (remember him?  --made by our granddaughter, travels in an envelope) and I traveled to Detroit for the 2010 Ford Motor Company National Meeting. And oh, what a meeting it was! The hottest new products in decades were there. We got to drive, touch, smell and hear those engines! Just some of the highlights: A Mustang with over 300 horsepower that gets 31 mpg. The new Fiesta with all the tech gadgetry of cars costing 5 times as much and yes ladies it comes with heated seats! The Fiesta is best in class in fuel economy for all cars, trucks & SUV’s, has touch screens, dual hatchbacks and more! There never, and I say never, has been such a good looking line-up.

These new Fords are not just pretty faces - they are so much more! At the center of this was Mr. Alan Mulally.  Now Flat Stan thinks this CEO is the smartest man in America and we tend to agree with him. Flat Stan was so excited to have his picture taken with Mr. Mulally and wants to share his big smile. Become a Facebook friend of Gresham Ford and you can see their picture! Mr. Mulally came to Ford from our good neighbor here in Gresham & the Northwest, “The Boeing Company” with a PLAN!!

How is he different? /why is he so smart? He had a PLAN. That plan positioned Ford Motor Company to not have to borrow money from the Government. If he had borrowed money, he would not tell the public he had paid it ALL back when he had not! He has built a culture among his management team that considers profits important, but safety is a must!  He has been a great leader letting us know his plan shortly after arriving at Ford. It was simple-most great plans are! The Plan centered on just four words: 1. QUALITY 2. GREEN 3.SAFETY 4. SMART TECHNOLOGY. He and Ford Motor Company have delivered!! So the final part of the plan - just come DRIVE ONE! Was a great trip! Flat Stan also got his backside tattooed (autographed). As a grandmother, I am usually not in favor
of tattoos but, it was Richard Petty for gosh sake – he’s a legend!

Three Blink Lane Change Signal - NEW

Presenting the Three Blink Lane Change Signal is now available at Gresham Ford.  If the sight of a blinker flashing on the car in front of you for miles and miles drives you crazy, you’re likely not the only one.  With a simple flick of the indicator that turns off automatically after 3 blinks, the 3-blink lane-change signal gives drivers a way to avoid creating an annoyance on the road.  This new technology will help when you are driving from Beaverton to Gresham in your Ford truck or car.  This lane-change technology simplifies the way drivers maneuver on the road and save the rest of us the annoyance of watching the light blink and wonder "Are they really going change lanes?".  With a simple flick of the switch — either up or down — the turn indicator blinks 3 times and automatically shuts Off.  The switch can be held in the lane-change position longer for additional blinks beyond the 3 minimum.  Now your grandmother can drive again with no one judging her.  To engage the turn signal, drivers move the switch into the standard position, one more press past the lanechange mode.  Demonstrating the three blink lane change signal is very easy and any sales professional at Gresham Ford located minutes from Portland Oregon can show you.  Portland Area Ford Dealerships are happy to be on the cutting edge of so much new technology.  To Use the Lever to Change Lanes first push the lever up/down to the first stop position and release. The turn signals will flash 3 times and stop.  Then push the lever up/down to the first stop position and hold. The turn signals will flash if the lever is held in this position.  To Use the Lever to Indicate Turns the left turn signal, push the lever down until it stops and release.  To operate the right turn signal, push the lever up until it stops and release.  To manually cancel turn signal operation, push the lever again in either direction, since it doesn’t lock in position.  This simple-to-use technology allows them to let go of the switch and concentrate on driving. Show that, instead of holding down the switch, they can give a quick tap, giving a 3-blink warning that they are about to merge and change lanes.  The Three Blink Lane Change is available on: 2011 Ford Fiesta, 2011 Ford Edge, 2011 Ford F-250/F-350/F-450 Super Duty Pickups, 2011 Ford F-350/F-450/F-550 Super Duty Chassis Cabs.  All of these models are all available at Gresham Ford your Portland Area Ford Dealer in Gresham.  Contact Gresham Ford Sales Department at 503-665-0101 or

Chevrolet Express Vans Recalled

General Motors said it is recalling 5,000 2010 model-year heavy-duty cargo and passenger vans and asking customers not to use the vans until the company can find a fix for a faulty alternator.

The company issued the same caution for some aftermarket alternators.

GM is advising customers with the affected alternators not to drive the vehicles, park them away from buildings and to disconnect the battery. GM also has stopped production of the vans until it finds a solution.

The affected vans are 2010 model year 2500 and 3500 Chevrolet Express vans with Vehicle Identification Numbers ending in A1129327 to A1142523, and GMC Savana units with VINs ending in A1128784 to A1901915.

Most of the vans are in rental fleets or on dealer lots, GM said, and few had been sold in retail. Light-duty model 1500 vans are not affected.

About 1,400 AC Delco aftermarket parts with the following numbers also are affected: 15200110; 15288861; 15263859 and 15847291. Users who had a heavy duty alternator replaced in February or March in a 2005-2010 heavy-duty Express or Savana van or other 2005-2009 GM truck or SUV should check their repair order receipts and, if a suspect part was involved, follow the same directions as for the new units, the company said.

Cinco De Mayo at the Plaza Del Sol

Press Release submitted by:

Lori Stegmann, Stegmann Agency – Farmers Insurance

202 SE 181st Ave, Suite 201

Portland, OR 97233-4874

503 667 -7971 503 666-8110 Fax

The “Plaza del Sol Community Events Committee” was initially formed as part of a subgroup of the Gresham Redevelopment Commission Advisory Committee (GRDC AC). The chairs of the Events Committee are Jean DeMaster of Human Solutions and Lori Stegmann of Farmers Insurance, both serve on the GRDC Advisory Committee. The group hopes to host several events throughout the year at the Plaza. We have already hosted “Pluto Day” where the City of Gresham recognized Pluto as an official planet. Possible future events could include a multicultural holiday celebration.

We will be holding our first annual Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at the Plaza del Sol located at 18709 SE Stark, Portland, OR (formerly the site of Fred Meyer). The event will begin at 3:00 pm and conclude at dusk (approximately 8:00 pm). We are expecting over 500 attendees.

The Cinco de Mayo will be a free community event open to everyone. Our goal is to provide a family-friendly event that embraces the diversity and similarities of our many different cultures. Activities will include local musicians, singers, a DJ, folkloric dancers, storytelling, face painting and crafts for the kids, and food. Alcohol will not be permitted. Local food vendors will be selling authentic Mexican food.

There has long been a desire for a Cinco de Mayo in East County by residents, business owners, and community leaders. The Rockwood area is rich in cultural diversity with a large Hispanic population. The Plaza del Sol serves as a symbol of renewal and revitalization of a neighborhood that is re-inventing itself into something much larger than its individual parts. This is community building at its best.

When the City of Gresham’s Urban Renewal purchased the Plaza property it opened many doors and opportunities. At some point, the property will be redeveloped, but in the meantime, the Gresham Redevelopment Commission has developed an interim use plan. The first phase of that plan has included:

- The painting of the Plaza del Sol. Last fall the community gathered together to paint the solar system at the Plaza.

- A walking path has been installed adjacent to the Plaza. Inside the path wildflowers have been planted and are beginning to bloom.

Future phases include the installation of a basketball court, a children’s play area, and benches.

Other exciting things are happening in Rockwood as well, referred to as “Rockwood in Motion”. These include:

- Light Rail Station Improvements - The redesign of the Tri-Met light rail station across from the Plaza on 188th & Burnside. Tri-Met, ODOT, and the City of Gresham have commissioned Dan Corson, an acclaimed Northwest artist, to design a signature piece of artwork to welcome commuters to Rockwood. Improvements will include the co-location of the two existing stations into one, new rail shelters, improved station lighting, landscaping, and an iconic art piece.

- 187th/188th Realignment between Stark and Burnside. This will align these two streets together to make a thoroughfare between Yamhill & Glisan. Thereby attracting future development and increasing pedestrian and traffic safety.

- 188th at Burnside – This will improve the 188th & Burnside intersection in conjunction with the light rail station improvements. Thus improving pedestrian safety and encouraging transit use.

- Stark Street Boulevard (190th to 197th) - Landscaping, street banners, and other public amenities will be added.

- Burnside Boulevard Improvement. This includes improvements from 181st to 197th along Burnside. Improvements include undergrounding of utilities, wide sidewalks, pedestrian-oriented street lighting, street trees, bike lanes, and on-street parking.
