Tips to Avoid being a Distracted Driver

With the road trip season upon us, this is a great time to review your driving habits to ensure that you are not a distracted driver.  The media has done a great job of sharing starting statics like this one from distraction.gov "In 2013, 3,154 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. This represents a 6.7 percent decrease in the number of fatalities recorded in 2012. Unfortunately, approximately 424,000 people were injured, which is an increase from the 421,000 people who were injured in 2012."

There are many activities that qualify as causing a distracted driving situation.  Essentially distracted driving is any activity that moves your attention from driving and in turn endangers your passengers or those traveling around you.

  • Texting
  • Surfing with your Cell Phone
  • Eating & Drinking
  • Talking to Passengers
  • Grooming including make-up application
  • Reading
  • Using Navigation System
  • Watching Videos
  • Adjusting Vehicle Controls
Typically the youngest and most inexperienced drivers are at the highest risk for distractions but that doesn't mean that you are immune if you are a driving pro.  Keeping safety in mind when driving can make the all the difference.  Below are a few tips to help you keep safe and focus on driving.

  • Don't be afraid to shut off your phone.  - Your texts, emails and alerts can wait.  Remind yourself that no update is more important than your safety.
  • Organize your vehicle - If you are planning to use a GPS, prepare it before you shift into drive.
  • Let Your Passengers Help - You are the driver, allow your passengers to manage everything else.
  • Try making your drive time, quiet time - We all need a little more Zen in our life.  Try making your driving time a dedicated quiet time dedicated to driving and decompressing.
We hope these tips will help you keep safe and help you spread the word.

Keeping Your Fuzzy Buddy Safe

More and more people are traveling with pets these days. From errands to vacations, there are a few steps to make sure your fuzzy companion is as safe as possible on every outing. Experts believe the best way for your dog to travel is in a certified, crash-tested crate. If a crate won’t fit in your vehicle, or isn’t an option, the next best restraint is a harness or dog- seat belt. Be sure it fits snugly, while allowing your pet to comfortably sit or lay down. Once your pet is properly restrained, here are a few other tips to make the trip more comfortable and stress-free:
• A new toy for the trip will be exciting as well as distracting
• If time allows, exercise your dog before getting in the car
• Stop every few hours to allow your dog to go to the bathroom and stretch their legs

Lastly, for the safety of your pet, be sure to have up-to-date vaccination and medical records with you, as well as a recent photo. And never, ever leave your pet unattended in a parked vehicle especially on hot days like today.  Happy trails!

Tips for Taking Care of Your Tires

Tires tend to be one of the most overlooked, yet important elements of your vehicle especially in the northwest.  In order to keep your family safe, you should check your tires at least once a month, and always before long trips. If you haven’t checked lately, now is the time to take a closer look. First, a visual inspection can tell you a lot about what’s going on. If there are punctures, tears or other signs of damage, bring your vehicle in right away to see if a repair or replacement is necessary. Next, use a tire gauge to ensure that all four tires are inflated to the correct pressure. Lastly, rotation, alignment and balance are also important maintenance issues for tires, typically requiring a professional. Stop in and see our Quick Lane for all your tire needs from inspection to repair to replacement.
