The all-new 2016 Focus RS is the pinnacle of performance hatchbacks from Ford. By delivering refined power, advanced all-wheel-drive (AWD) technology and uncompromised driving dynamics Ford has truly brought the Focus to a whole new level of fun and Gresham Ford is bringing it directly to you.
The 2016 Focus RS takes the Ford global performance car strategy to the next level by combining the Ford SVT (North America), Team RS (Europe) and Ford Racing Team to create Ford Performance. This all new All Wheel Driver version of the Focus features a twin-scroll 2.3L EcoBoost engine that delivers 350 horsepower(1) and 350 lb.‑ft. of torque(1).
The exterior is dramatic and fit for purpose, balancing high-performance design with functional attributes that focus on aerodynamics and the cooling demands of the powertrain and brakes. With more speed, more performance and a unique look, the #FocusRS will be the fastest production Focus currently available in the world. And we all know fast translates to fun.
We recently saw an example of the 2017 Ford Focus RS at the #PortlandAutoShow. The enthusiast inspired all new Focus RS offers agile handling, cornering speed and high-octane performance thanks to its high-output 2.3L EcoBoost engine with its best in class 350 hp and 350lb ft of torque and the new Ford Performance All Wheel Drive with Dynamic Torque Vectoring. The Focus RS is equipped with driver selectable Driver Modes including a Drift Mode that allows controlled oversteer drifts and Launch Control. And to top it off you can fo from 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds.
Ford Performance All-wheel drive (AWD) with Dynamic Torque Vectoring
This new technology from Ford combines outstanding traction and grip with unmatched agility and cornering speed. Driving enthusiasts will appreciate the Focus RS that has been tuned to deliver exceptional grip — with lateral acceleration exceeding 1 g — as well as cornering speed and acceleration out of a bend. We think you will find that this car delivers the ultimate fun-to-drive experience with neutral and adjustable limit handling as well as the ability to achieve controlled oversteer drifts on the track. During cornering the rear drive unit (RDU) pre-emptively diverts torque immediately to the outer rear wheel based on inputs such as steering wheel angle, lateral acceleration, yaw and speed. The safety system monitors multiple vehicle sensors 100 times per second sensing the previously mentioned input data to keep you on the road. The twin electronically controlled clutch packs on each side of the RDU manage the front/rear torque split as well as the side-to-side torque distribution on the rear axle. While the independent RDU control unit continuously varies the front/rear and side-to-side torque distribution to suit current driving conditions. A maximum of 70% of the drive torque can be diverted to the rear axle and up to 100% of the available torque (the 70%) at the rear axle can be sent to each rear wheel.
The all-new 2016 Focus RS makes its own performance-themed mark on comfort and convenience. The RECARO® sport seats are designed with the performance driver in mind and look sharp too. Ford Performance worked in cooperation with RECARORECARO® to produce the sport bucket front seats. Thick side bolstering provides lateral support to keep the driver firmly placed in the seat during aggressive cornering maneuvers. Standard equipment on the front driver seat includes 6‑way manual controls. The front-passenger seat comes standard with 4‑way manual controls.
There is even a RS2 Package for the Focus RS that includes:
- Charcoal Black full leather-trimmed RECARO® sport seats with Miko® Dinamica micro sueded cloth inserts and RS logo
- Driver 8‑way power seat
- Heated exterior mirrors
- Heated front seats
- Heated steering wheel
- Voice-activated Navigation System with SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link Services
The key technology behind the performance capability and efficiency of the the Ford Focus RS is the 2.3L EcoBoost engine. Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber of each cylinder by solenoid-controlled high-pressure injectors and compared to traditional fuel delivery where fuel is mixed with intake air prior to entering the chamber it greatly adds to the power produced.
Fuel is pumped from the tank at a normal pressure of around 200 psi to the engine compartment. A camshaft-driven high-pressure fuel pump increases fuel pressures of up to 2150 psi, depending on the demands of the engine. Direct-injection fuel injectors are located inside the combustion chamber. Each injector delivers a precise fuel spray into each cylinder, allowing a higher compression ratio to help improve engine performance and reduce fuel consumption. An electronic control system varies the timing and intensity of the fuel delivery according to the engine’s operating conditions and demand from the driver. This technology is what makes the Focus RS so responsive and powerfully fun to drive.
What's Under the Hood of the Ford Focus RS?
The Focus RS carries an engine that provides 350 horsepower @ 6000 rpm(1) and produces 350 lb.‑ft. of torque @ 3200 rpm(1). Delivering a broad, flat torque curve with maximum torque through the powerband for sustained acceleration is amazing and we recommend that everyone tries it at least once. The Focus RS has a compression ratio of 9.5:1. The Twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti‑VCT) also help to make this the most responsive fun car you have ever driven. The Dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) is made from lightweight aluminum cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder. The large twin-scroll low-inertia turbocharger separates the exhaust pulses for pairs of cylinders while enabling quicker turbine spin-up and providing enhanced acceleration responsiveness and efficiency. The large turbocharger and compressor deliver optimum airflow. Ford also designed a large intercooler that truly maximizes charge density. With over 20 psi of boost available you will feel the Eco-Boost difference of the Ford Performance Team.
