Many businesses that incest in new equipment will be able to write off up to 100% of these purchases on their 2011 returns. Normally, business spread these deductions over several years. But now, due to the tax benefits provided under IRC Section 168 (k), qualifying businesses can write then off in the first year they are placed into service.

Section 168 of the tax law allows a company to take a bonus depreciation deduction of up to 100% of the cost of qualified property, which include several Ford vehicles. Unfortunately for the Oregon small business owner these vehicles do not include Mustang Convertibles. Passenger automobiles under 6000 lbs. GVWR like the Ford fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Taurus, or even the Escape and Explorer may qualify for up to $11,060 in tax deductions. However to recieve the 100% write off you need to purchase a Truck, Van or SUV over 6,000lbs GVWR like a F-150 or Econoline Van. There is no set dollar limit to the amount of property that can be deducted as long as it is purchased and placed into service between September 9th 2010 and December 31, 2011. Many times there is a need for one or more qualifying vehicles. The vehicle must also be new, not pre-owned and must be used at least 50% for business. As of January 1st, 2012 abd beyond the bonus depreciation deduction under section 168(k) is scheduled to be reduced from 100% to 50% of the cost of the new equipment. So December 31st, 2011 could be the deadline for their best opportunity.

NW business owners and fleet managers are putting more thought and effort into what and when they purchase vehicles. The Economic Stimulus Act has created the right time and the right incentives for thousands of business owners and fleet managers. Oregon Ford Fleet Dealerships are spreading the word about how businesses can benefit from the bonus depreciation tax deduction provided under IRS section 168(k) and the tax deduction allowed under IRS section 179 when a company purchases a eligible vehicle. Purchases must be made by December 31st 2011. Both of these tax provisions currently offer businesses a tax deduction equal to 100% of the cost of most new equipment. In the case of vehicles, the new equipment must have a gross vehicle weight rating over 6,000lbs. This includes the purchase of qualifying F150 and Super Duty Trucks and or E Series Vans. Next-generation hybrids for next-generation fuel efficiency
Next year, Ford also will grow its electrified vehicle production capacity when it launches the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi plug-in vehicles. Both five-passenger hybrids will provide another fuel-efficient option for customers.

Ford’s new hybrid powertrain will be available exclusively in C-MAX, and it will deliver
a more than 25 percent improvement in fuel economy versus the outgoing Escape Hybrid while still offering hybrid customers the five-passenger capability they expect.

The Ford C-MAX Energi targets more than 500 miles of driving range using the battery and engine, more than any other plug-in or extended-range vehicle. It also targets AT-PZEV status and delivers better charge-sustaining fuel economy than the Chevrolet Volt.

“The C-MAX family of electrified vehicles will provide versatile, practical options for customers who need utility while reducing carbon output and significantly lowering fuel costs,” Kuzak said. “No other company is providing this type of choice in a hybrid or plug-in hybrid.”

Ford developed the new generation of hybrid electric vehicles using its extensive experience with first-generation hybrids including the Ford Escape Hybrid, the world’s first SUV hybrid. A hybrid vehicle is powered in part by a gasoline engine, and partly by a battery-powered electric motor. The two systems work together, so there is no need to plug in to charge the battery. Read the small print on tires lately? Thought not. The only thing it has in common with a good spy thriller is the indecipherable code. But all that verbiage molded into the sidewall has meanings. and most of it is important. Let's discuss one aspect of the mini-novel in rubber: Tire Load Rating.

The Basic Math - If the load rating of the tire is too low, it can overheat or even self-destruct. The basic formula for approximate load capacity of each tire uses the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), divided by four (dual rear wheels are slightly more complicated). If the gross weight of the truck is 6,000lbs, then each tire must support at least 1,500 pounds. However, that's only for an empty truck. No driver, no payload. Unless that vehicle is going to be part of a static display in a truck museum, it's going to need tires with a higher load rating.

The Real World. As a real world example, let's look at a type of tire often used for application such as a 2011 F-350 Super Duty Chassis equipped with dual rear wheels and a landscape dump body: LT245/75R17E. That's a light truck tire, 245/75 size and aspect ratio for a 17 inch wheel. The 'E' is for Load Range E (LRE) The only problem is that information molded into the tire wall probably doesn't read exactly the same as the catalog specification. The tire description can include other numbers, and the load range index is likely located elsewhere on the tire. Confused yet?

The six tires on this particular F-350 have large sidewall markings from BFGoodrich; LT245/75R17 121/1188 M+S. Those other digits are material for a future article, covering sipes (sounds like a device for milking reindeer, but isn't) to section widths. Today the topic is tire load range. Look at a line of the text near the wheel rim and you'll notice that the missing inform is spelled out: LOAD RANGE E. The "E" designation also indicates a 10ply rating and on our BFGoodrich tire example, a maximum inflation of 80 psi. It is important to check with the tire manufacturer as tires of the same ply rating may require different inflation pressures. A ply rating is the equivalent strength compared to outdated bias ply tires. Also note that any tire pressure listed on a sidewall is the maximum allowed. The normal tire pressure is shown on the vehicle's Safety Compliance Certification Label, located on the left front door lock facing or on the door latch pillar.

Summer in the Northwest

Now that warm weather has finally reached the Northwest, the Gresham Ford family would like to offer parents important reminders for keeping their children safe this summer. A few preventive steps go a long way in ensuring an enjoyable and carefree season.

Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, even with a window slightly open. If the outside temperature hits 101 degrees, the temperature inside an enclosed vehicle can reach 140 degrees.

Distracted parents can do the following to avoid this type of danger:

· Carry a stuffed animal with the child safety seat, shifting it to the front seat to serve as a reminder to the driver that a child is the safety seat.

· Set a cell phone reminder to confirm child drop-off at day-care.

· Keep all vehicle doors and trunk locked. (All Ford vehicles sold in North America feature a glow-in-the-dark inside trunk release handle that enables someone trapped inside the trunk to open the trunk door.)

Also, during road trips, make sure that your child is bucked up safely.

Oregon state law requires that child passengers be restrained in approved child safety seats until they weigh forty pounds.

KICK OFF CELL PHONE COLLECTION DRIVE IN East County

NORWELL, Mass., May 30th - More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers, and Gresham Ford are calling on all Americans to support for these brave men and women by donating your unused cell phones. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect over 1 Million cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.

“Over the past few years, we have been amazed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue.” says Brittany Bergquist, Cell Phones for Soldiers co-founder. “It is easy for Americans to make a small sacrifice of support by donating their unused cell phones, and providing families with a much-needed connection to their loved ones overseas.”

Local residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones at Gresham Ford located at 1940 East Powell Blvd in Gresham.

“We’re proud to show our support for U.S. soldiers, and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers,” says Bess Wills, General Manager of Gresham Ford.

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has raised millions of dollars in donations and distributed millions of prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

“We are continuously overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support of thousands of Americans who have helped our troops speak with their loved ones,” says the teens’ father, Bob Bergquist. “However, the need for support keeps growing as more troops are sent to the Middle East or are asked to serve extended tours of duty.”

Through increased fundraising efforts, the Bergquist family hopes to raise more than $10 million in the next five years to fund new programs, such as providing video phones and prepaid service to allow troops abroad to see their families on a regular basis.

The donated phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each phone – the money is used to purchase prepaid calling cards which are sent to troops.

Approximately half of the phones ReCellular processes are reconditioned and resold to wholesale companies in over 40 countries around the world. Phones and components that cannot be refurbished are dismantled and recycled to reclaim materials, including:

• Gold, silver and platinum from circuit boards

• Copper wiring from phone chargers

• Nickel, iron, cadmium and lead from battery packs

• Plastic from phone cases and accessories

GRESHAM, Ore. – Gresham Ford is bringing Ford Motor Company’s innovative Drive One 4 UR School program to the local community in an effort to raise up to $6,000 for Sam Barlow and Centennial high schools. For every person who test-drives a Ford vehicle at Gresham Ford on Saturday, May 14, Gresham Ford and Ford Motor Company will donate $20 to Sam Barlow and Centennial high schools. The funds will help support many of programs that have suffered from the economic downturn in our community.

“We’re thrilled to be participating in Drive One 4 UR School again to support our local students,” said Bess Wills, General Manager at Gresham Ford. “We know how important extracurricular activities are to our high school students, and as part of this community, we want to help.”

To date, Gresham Ford has raised nearly $8,000 for local high school students through Drive One 4 UR School.

The event, which will be held May 14th 2011, will feature the Ford Explorer, Focus, Fiesta, Edge, F-150, Mustang or other available models including the new eco-boost engine.

Since the start of Ford’s Drive One 4 UR School program in 2007, more than 275,000 test-drives at more than 1,500 events have generated over $5 million in donations for high schools nationwide.

In addition to raising much-needed revenue for high school extracurricular activities, the program gives participants the chance to experience Ford’s exciting new vehicles and leading safety technologies, including:

• MyKey™, a system that allows parents to limit a vehicle’s top speed and audio volume to encourage safe driving behavior in teens;

• SYNC®, the fully integrated, in-vehicle voice-activated communications and entertainment system with 911 AssistTM, Vehicle Health Report and GPS-based features including business search and call completion;

• Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) with Cross Traffic Alert, which uses radar to check the blind spot and helps notify the driver of approaching traffic when backing out of a parking spot; and,

The SCR is where most of the NOx is removed. That is accomplished by injecting DEF into the exhaust stream that, through a series of chemical reactions, converts NOx into water and harmless nitrogen.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) - DEF is a solution of approximately 32.5 percent high-purity urea and 67.5 percent demineralized water that is injected into the exhaust system, removing most of the NOx from the exhaust. The solution is clear, nontoxic and safe to handle. DEF is readily available from the dealership, truck stops and automotive retail chains. Chevy Silverado and Ram Chassis Cab also use an SCR/DEF system to meet emission standards. However, Ram Pickup uses a less efficient, Lean NOx Trap (LNT) system.

You need to know that the Ram Pickup does not use DEF, and their Lean NOx Trap system has to constantly cycle between a lean and a rich fuel mix, which reduces Ram’s potential fuel efficiency.
The SCR allows our engine to continually run at the optimum fuel mixture — helping to deliver a 5-8 percent fuel efficiency increase over non-SCR competition.

Also, compared to GM, note that our DEF fill port is conveniently located next to the fuel filler, compared to the less-convenient underhood fill location on Silverado.

Bottom Line - Being able to design a new engine with an SCR/DEF system contributed to Ford engineers’ ability to develop a clean diesel engine that outperforms the competition both in power and fuel efficiency.

Does it cost more to operate a 2011 Super Duty because it requires DEF?

The primary advantage of having SCR/DEF on the 6.7L Power Stroke is the 5-8 percent increase in fuel efficiency. This gives Super Duty a significant leg up before factoring in any other variables. Here’s a quick look at operating costs and savings of SCR/DEF:
Assumptions:

• 15,000 miles of driving per year

• DEF is $3-$5 per gallon

• Customer will use approximately 5 gallons of DEF every 7500 miles

• Customer will see a 5-8 percent advantage in fuel efficiency with Super Duty

Tota l Cost /Savings :

• 2 DEF refills = $30-$50

• Fuel savings 5-8 percent

(@ $3 per gallon of fuel) = $142-$222

Total savings = $92 to $192

Pledge: Will You Buy American-Made?

The fact is you cast a vote every time you

open your wallet. It is a global trade

battle and what you purchase makes a

difference. In 1960, foreign made

products made up just 8% of American

purchases. Today that number is nearly

60%. Jobs are the answer to the economic

recovery. Manufacturing has to play

a significant role in that! One of the

most powerful points shown by this

series is; if every American spent an

extra $3.33 today on U.S. made goods, it

would create almost 10,000 new jobs in

this country - a concept worth

contemplating. While it is not always

possible, I challenge you to take a look

when comparing future purchases. It is

not as hard as you may think. One major

toothpaste is “Made In America” while

another is not. Also consider where

their International Corporate

Headquarters is located. That makes a

great deal of difference of where the jobs

are created. Just something to think

The Gresham Barlow Education Foundation is Helping to Ensure Tomorrow's Workforce is Ready

It's a skill sometimes taken for granted, but business owners know employees from all walks of life need it to be sucessful. From the kitchen helper who reads the safety precautions relating to fire hazards in the kitchen , to the court clerk who selects information from carious statutes to provide assistance in cases where clarity of jurisprudence is required, the ability to read and understand text is critical for today's workforce.

The Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation is dedicated to improving the skills of struggling readers in our schools - students who will be tomorrow's workers! Each year, the GBEF's Phon-A-Thon raises money for the Learn to Read program. Through the program, under-performing readers in all eleven elementary schools are identified in kindergarten or first frade and provided extra support to improve reading ability. Our efforts are paying off! Nine out of ten students served in the first year of the program showed documented growth in reading levels ranging from one to three levels.

The Foundation will hold its 2011 Phon-A-Thon February 21st thru 24th. Over the course of four evenings, student volunteers will phone parents of students in the district and other community members to ask them for a cash donation in support of the Learning to Read Campaign.

During the Phon-A-Thon, the Foundation is once again partnering with Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce member Gresham Ford. Contributors who donate $40 or more will receive a $20 gift certificate toward service through the Gresham Ford Quick Lane (they provide maintenance work on All Makes and All Models) as well as a FREE DVD of the Tails of Abbygail Volume One and will have the opportunity to choose one book per child thanks to Books 4 Giving.

Last year's Phon-A-Thon raised funds for the Learning ro Read program with all of the funds going to the students. However there is still much more to be done. Azure Dynamics will integrate its Force Drive™ battery electric drivetrain in the Ford Transit Connect Electric.  Force Drive components have been used in more than 40 vehicle integrations and have more than 25 million miles of on-the-road experience.  Azure Dynamics has been designing and developing electric drive systems for more than 20 years, providing customers with zero-emission transportation solutions.

Ford is delivering an all-electric version of the Transit Connect light-duty commercial vehicle in 2010.  Ford is collaborating with Azure Dynamics, a world leader in the development and production of hybrid electric and electric commercial vehicles.  Leveraging its ONE Ford strategy, Ford has committed to delivering all-electric power for commercial applications on a global platform. Dear Editor,

Every year for the past number of years busy high school kids have given up their evenings for a week in February to help raise money to support reading programs in our schools. Kids who read well are better students, better students get to college. College graduates make for a better work force and community. Kids who read well become adults who help build strong communities.

My wife and I have raised five children and they all attended Schools in the Gresham District. We have good teachers, but they can’t do it one their own, We need to support our teachers and students. As a business man, and as a person who can see that the future of our community rests in the hands of these kids, I want to do everything I can to make sure our students are successful readers. I’m behind the Gresham-Barlow Education Foundation’s Phone-a-thon and you can be sure that I’ll be happy to “Answer the Call” February 21st – 24th.

The last days to order a 2011 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor

The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (CVPI) Final Order period has arrived. This rear wheel drive sedan has proven to be a mainstay for the police sector. With its roomy interior and sturdy safe frame the Crown Victoria has served our peace officers as well as Ford Motor Company well through the years. Gresham Ford supplied and continues to supply many citites, counties and other municipal offices with police pursuit vehicles at a great value to the tax payer. Gresham Ford is dedicated to the East County community and has utilized their local officers and police as a sounding board to hone the Ford Police Pursuit vehicles options and accessories to best suit the public sector. Gresham Ford is proud to hold the State of Oregon Contract for all Ford vehicles including the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Ford Municipal and Government Fleet sales has also awarded Gresham Ford the highest volume government sales dealership for upwards of 5 years in a row. Annette Wetzel-Ramirez assumed the position as Government and Municipal Fleet Manager as Earl Day departed in 2009. The two had worked in tanduem for over five years building strong and lasting relationships with fleet managers around the state. Providing the taxpapers the best value for their dollar is the driving force behind their detailed and responsive customer service.

The purpose of today's announce from Ford Motor Company and the Government Sales Division specifically is to inform Oregon Auto Dealerships like Gresham Ford to provide guidance on the final submission of CVPI orders for the 2011 model year. This information is being forwarded the Fleet and Operation Managers and professionals responsible for procuring and maintaining government vehicles.

The current situation of the crown victoria production is that there are approximately 5,000 CVPI orders in the Unscheduled Order Bank. These orders will fill production through late March 2011 for the police pursuit vehicles. Currently there is production available for 22,000 more order of this Police sedan. The final CVPI order date is March 1, 2011. You are invited to contact Annette directly at 503-489-1605 with your questions or to receive a full order guide including detailed descriptions of the police preparation packages.
Orders must be submitted with an order receipt date of March 1, 2011 or earlier to be clean and buildable. Late orders will receive a balance out message from Ford Motor Company. Gresham Ford will forward this information to any Oregon government agencies that the message applies to that hold a standing purchase order for the Police sedan. The final production week for the 2011 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is scheduled to be August 29, 2011. The earlier you order the better. Gresham Ford's Government Fleet Sales Department is in the process of contacting all law enforcement customers and advising them of the final order date of the Crown Victoria. If your agency is wanting to order a 2011 CVPI before production moves to the all new platform - Don't wait, contact the Oregon Ford Dealer with the State of Oregon Contract for ALL Ford Vehicles now. The earlier orders are submitted, the better so act today. Gresham Ford will also be determining whether they will place stock (unsold) orders and how many to place to serve the Oregon law enforcement community. Ford Motor Company will not provide any special floor plan assistance - please keep this in mind while considering time lines of accessory installation. There will not be an additional order incentive program as well. The production for new Ford Police Interceptors is currently scheduled to begin by the end of 2011, with deliveries in 1st Quarter, 2012. Let’s take a closer look at how the all-new EcoBoost 3.5L V6 engine crushes any power and durability myths.

EcoBoost™ V6 Engine Myth: Turbocharged engines run very hot. EcoBoost Reality: The all-new EcoBoost turbochargers are protected from the heat with water-cooled center bearings. In the past, “coking” was a problem for many turbos since they couldn’t shed heat without the engine running. The water-cooled center bearings with convection cooling (or siphoning) keep the EcoBoost engine coolant circulating after the engine is shut down helping to cool the turbos.
Myth: The EcoBoost 3.5L V6 is a car engine. EcoBoost Reality: Customers might think the F-150 EcoBoost 3.5L V6 engine is the same engine as the Taurus SHO and Flex since it shares the same displacement and the EcoBoost name. Truth is, they share basic architecture, but the EcoBoost engine under the hood of F-150 is the first rear-wheel drive application and is specifically engineered and tested to be Built Ford Tough® Key Ford F-150 Truck-specific Features include an optimized intake and exhaust camshaft designs for a balance of optimum horsepower, torque and fuel efficiency as well as specific tuning of the Ti-VCT (Twin independent Variable Cam Timing). The specific cylinder heads with intake port “turbulence shelf” of the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost Engine on the all new Ford F150 also boasts a cCast exhaust manifolds for heavy-duty operation and durability. Maximizing the cooling system to effectively manage engine heat also adds to the new Ford engine efficiency and effectiveness. The polymer-coating on the lower main bearing ensures durability. The F-150-specific turbochargers with water-cooled center bearings cap off the new Ford engine that was built by Ford by the ground up.

Diesel Engine Technologies have also gone thru and complete overhaul as well. The new Ford engine offers turbocharging with intercooler and direct injection fuel delivery while the steel piston upper ring carriers help maximize piston durability. Accompaned with the integrated engine oil cooler is definately a truck engine.

You may have heard the myth that turbocharged engines run very hot. The EcoBoost realityis that the all-new EcoBoost turbochargers are protected from the heat with water-cooled center bearings. In the past, “coking” was a problem for many turbos since they couldn’t shed heat without the engine running. The water-cooled center bearings with convection cooling (or siphoning) keep the EcoBoost engine coolant circulating after the engine is shut down helping to cool the turbos.

You may have also heard people say that they can't believe that the EcoBoost 3.5L V6 engine isn’t powerful enough for a full-size pickup. Again the EcoBoost Reality: The all-new EcoBoost 3.5L V6 has more torque than any competitive engine and 50 more horsepower than the GM 5.3L V8 engine. Yes, you read that correctly: more power than competitive V8 engines. And we’re talking a diesel engine-like broad, flat torque curve. Worth noting: EcoBoost power figures are based on regular unleaded gasoline. Extra-cost premium fuel is NOT required for EcoBoost to deliver the power.

Myth: Serious towing and hauling isn’t something the EcoBoost 3.5L V6 engine can do. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday – not so much for the celebration itself, but for what it stands for. It is unique to the United States of America. It so speaks to our history, our gifts and our ability to work hard and celebrate our freedoms. As the 2010 Thanksgiving Holiday passes, I have so many things to celebrate. This November 27th will be the first Small Business Saturday event sponsored by American Express. This is a day to honor the businesses that give our neighborhoods character and boost our local economy. SnowCap Community Charities: Food relief and more

At Leonard and Shirley Storm's apartment in east Multnomah County, Leonard comes to the door to greet visitors but is soon upstaged by Penelope, the couple's fluffy-haired cat.

"We got her for the nice sum of five dollars," Leonard says, as Penelope rubs against his leg.

The Storms are used to looking for bargains. So the monthly delivery of a food box from SnowCap Community Charities is a ritual they welcome.

"They bring staples," Shirley says. "Canned foods and cereal." She cooks from scratch and has plenty of experience stretching supplies. "I make mock ground beef from beans and oats and rice."

"I happen to be married to an awfully good cook," Leonard says.

The food box is an example of SnowCap at work. The agency, which has served east Multnomah County for 43 years, delivers food boxes to more than 500 seniors each month.

SnowCap also stocks a food pantry and provides other services to low-income people who live east of 82nd Avenue within Multnomah County. At its location in Gresham's Rockwood neighborhood, SnowCap is surrounded by some of the metro area's lowest-income residents.

"We're having over 6,000 people come through the pantry in a month," says Judy Alley, SnowCap executive director. "I can tell you that in 20 years we have never seen this many people needing food assistance. Our floors are wearing down." Alley says that about two years ago, the agency saw about 4,000 people a month.

SnowCap was created in the 1960s through a joint effort by area churches. "We don't get government money," says Alley, who was made director in 1991. The agency relies on donations from churches, businesses and service clubs, and grants for its $583,000 budget. It has five full-time and five part-time staffers and about 600 volunteers each year it could use more volunteer drivers and food-pantry shelf stockers.

The Storms, Alley says, are the kind of people who need help from SnowCap. Leonard worked for 23 years at Franz Bakery until he suffered a brain aneurysm, which forced him to retire early at age 51.

Now Leonard, 71, and Shirley, 78, survive on his pension and their Social Security benefits. They have no car, and shop at discount groceries and a nearby bakery thrift store.

Costs from health problems have added to the financial strain. If the Storms didn't get the SnowCap food box, Shirley says, "it would be a hardship."

"Toward the end of the month, it sure comes in handy," Leonard says.
